The Mission Statement of The
American Board of Plastic Surgery,
Inc. is to promote safe, ethical,
efficacious plastic surgery to the
public by maintaining high standards
for the education, examination,
certification, recertification, and
maintenance of certification of
plastic surgeons as specialists and
subspecialists.
Plastic surgeons who are certified
by The American Board of Plastic
Surgery® have graduated from an
accredited medical school and have
completed at least five years of
additional training as a resident
surgeon.
Residency requirements
include a minimum of three-years in
an accredited general surgery
program and a minimum of two-years
in plastic surgery.
After these years of
training, doctors then must
successfully complete comprehensive
written and oral exams in order to
become certified.
Candidates applying for board
certification must maintain an
ethical standing in the profession
and a moral standing in the
community.
Candidates must also limit
their major professional activity to
the field of plastic surgery.
