All surgical procedures have associated
risks.
Everyone involved – the patient,
doctor, nurses, and other health care
providers – needs to do his or her best in
order to assure the best possible results.
Any instructions given need to be
followed as best as possible.
Any problems need to be reported to
the doctor or nurses as soon as possible.
All surgeries cause a degree of pain,
bruising, and swelling.
Our office staff will provide you
with information to help minimize your
discomfort after surgery.
For example, ice may be used to
decrease swelling and bruising and a
prescription may be given for pain
medication.
Following these verbal and written
instructions will minimize your
post-operative discomfort and maximize your
results.
All surgeries cause permanent scars.
You will be given information
explaining how to care for your scar to
reduce its long term visibility.
Instructions will include protecting
the incision from injury and sun exposure
and massaging the incision with vitamin E to
help reduce the build-up of scar tissue.
With all surgeries there is a risk of
bleeding. Aspirin and other non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs, like ibuprofen, can
increase the risk of bleeding.
It is important to inform the doctor
about all medications you are taking so that
you are not put to any undue risk.
There is a risk of infection after surgery.
Taking prescribed antibiotics and
following instructions on how to keep your
incision clean after surgery, can decrease
your risk of infection.
If something unexpected happens
post-operatively, please let us know so that
we can intervene as early as possible to
prevent greater problems later.
If you have additional questions about
surgical risks, please ask the doctor when
you come for a surgery consultation.
