Iquitos, Peru ~ October 2008

  
Dr. Stieg was the Plastic Surgeon with the Florida Hospital SHARES mission trip to Iqiutos, Peru - 24 October to 2 November 2008.  The SHARES surgical team of twelve included Joy and Tina who also are with Plastic Surgery Specialists.

  This was Dr. Stieg's third trip to this city which is at the origin of the Amazon.

One of the most memorable cases was a 16 year old called "octopus girl" because of her polydactily; this caused her so much emberassment that she was not going to school and was working as a housekeeper for an elderly couple. The SHARES team was able to give her "normal" hand, and even more significantly, Rita Valdivia, our Peru coordinator, was able to get her enrolled in the Adventist School in Lima.

The team was also able to perform cleft lip and palate repairs.
