Gynecomastia (the
abnormal development of breasts in men), though rarely discussed, occurs
in an estimated 40-60% of men. It
can affect one breast or both and in most cases, its cause is unknown.
For men who desire
surgical correction, a breast reduction procedure can help by removing
fat, glandular tissue, and excess skin (when necessary).
The result is a more masculine-looking chest that is flatter,
firmer, and better contoured.
If the excess mass
consists primarily of glandular tissue, it will be surgically removed
through a relatively small incision around the
nipple and areola.
If the excess mass consists primarily of fatty tissue,
liposuction can be used. When
excess skin must be removed, longer incisions may be necessary,
resulting in longer scars.
The best candidates
for gynecomastia correction are healthy men with firm, elastic skin that
will reshape to the body’s new contours after surgery.
Surgery may be discouraged for obese or overweight men who have
not first attempted to correct the problem with exercise or weight loss.
