Florida Hospital SHARES, a branch of the Florida Hospital Foundation, helps
to provide healthcare services to individuals, especially children, in other countries. There are two main types of the SHARES mission
trips: rural medicine and plastic surgery.
The rural medicine trips offer
medical consultations, free of charge, to people who have inadequate access
to heath care within their countries. The teams are sometimes also
able to offer dentistry, physical therapy, and eyeglass
distribution.
Dr. Stieg and his staff at Plastic Surgery Specialists participate in
the plastic surgery trips. The purpose of these trips is to provide
surgical treatment for congenital birth defects, especially cleft lips and
palates. Thousands of children are born with cleft lips and palates to
parents who are unable to afford the surgery to correct the defect. By
providing all of the necessary supplies and offering the surgery for free, Dr. Stieg
and his team are able to greatly impact the lives of the
children they help.
The medical professionals from Florida Hospital work side by side with
local doctors and nurses, sharing their expertise and knowledge as they
work. Dr. Stieg has been working with doctors in Merida and Oaxaca,
Mexico to establish multidisciplinary cleft teams that will offer the same type of comprehensive care to
Mexican children that we offer here in Central Florida.
