Breast
lift, also known as mastopexy, can offer a more youthful
and flattering breast appearance by reducing breast
droop (ptosis), which is caused by aging and gravity.
This surgery removes excess skin resulting in an
elevated placement of the nipple and areola.
In
order to remove the excess breast skin, incisions are
made around the nipple and areolar complex, extending
down to the inframammary
crease, and then along the
inframammary crease.
Generally, the removal of larger amounts of
breast skin is avoided, as this can affect the
projection of the breast and result in a flatter breast.
Most
women are able to breastfeed after undergoing mastopexy,
but this is not guaranteed.
It is generally recommended that patients not
attempt to breastfeed after undergoing mastopexy as it
may lead to additional droop after the surgery. There is
also a risk of interference with normal breast sensation
and nipple erectility.
